Nuevo Baztán: Historic Ensemble, Nature Trails and Pilgrimage

At the heart of Nuevo Baztán is a historic centre with buildings, streets and squares. The main area of the Conjunto Histórico de Nuevo Baztán comprises this historic ensemble, which is designated as a Bien de Interés Cultural. Its creation was planned from around 1709 by José Benito de Churriguera; construction had been completed by 1713.

Culture and History

The Iglesia de San Francisco Javier follows a Greek-cross floor plan. Its towers and dome are topped with roof finials. Inside are altarpieces attributed to José Benito Churriguera. The Palacio de Goyeneche is arranged around a square central courtyard enclosed on the ground floor by round-arched arcades.

The Centro de Interpretación de Nuevo Baztán is located in the former wine cellar of the industrial complex. It presents the historic industries that developed in Nuevo Baztán and its surrounding area. Models, explanatory panels and reproductions of objects illustrate these topics; the exhibition is complemented by an audiovisual programme about the life of Goyeneche and his architect, Churriguera.

Visiting on Site

Admission to the Centro de Interpretación de Nuevo Baztán is free. The centre is accessible to most people with physical, psychological or sensory disabilities. Group access must be arranged in advance; a group may comprise no more than 30 people and must be accompanied by a person responsible for it.

Parking is available on the roads adjacent to the historic centre of Nuevo Baztán. The restoration of the courtyard of the Palacio de Goyeneche removed architectural barriers and allows visitors to enter safely.

Nature and Trails

The Senda de Valmores is an easy 5.00-kilometre hiking route that takes 150 minutes. It follows a circular nature trail and begins in the historic centre of Nuevo Baztán. Along the way, landscapes of plateaus and downy oak forests blend with the ruins of former factories and fulling mills.

The route passes through the biodiverse Valmores Valley. Birds of prey can be observed there, while centuries-old holm oaks provide shade. The “Nuevo Baztán Imprescindible” route leads on foot through the monumental ensemble and to the most significant civil buildings in Nuevo Baztán. The two route ideas therefore place different emphasis on landscape and buildings.

Traditions and Crafts

The “Javierada” is a popular pilgrimage organised on the second Sunday in March by people from Navarre living in Madrid. The Centro de Interpretación de Nuevo Baztán also offers workshops for children and adults, where participants can learn about making scented soaps, modelling glass and producing handmade paper.
