Nature
San Martín De La Vega is one of the 16 municipalities whose territory lies partly within the protected Parque Regional del Sureste. On the outskirts of the town, on the M-506 road towards Arganda, lies Parque Tierno Galván (Parque de los patos). The park was created from a former gravel pit and opened in 1983; it belongs to Parque Regional del Sureste and has a deep lagoon.
Parque Tierno Galván is home to native riverside vegetation. Birds that can be observed there include mallards, coots, European robins and greylag geese. The Los Albardales Ornithological Reserve is located in Soto del Tamarizo and covers approximately eight hectares. It is integrated into Parque Regional del Sureste; its wetland serves numerous bird species as a feeding ground, resting place and even breeding site.
Culture and History
The Iglesia Parroquial de la Natividad de Nuestra Señora in San Martín De La Vega is a 16th-century religious building with a rectangular floor plan, a single nave and a flat-ended chancel.
The Casa-Palacio de Gózquez de Arriba belongs to the affiliated complex of the El Escorial monastery and was built in the 16th century on the orders of Philip II. It consists of four wings forming an inner courtyard that is partially open to the east. The vaulted cellars of the main building were formerly used to store wine jugs.
The Parque Histórico de la Batalla del Jarama is a joint initiative of Arganda del Rey, Morata de Tajuña, San Martín De La Vega and Rivas Vaciamadrid. Various routes convey the heritage of the Spanish Civil War and the remains of the battle. In the participating municipalities, information is available on fortifications and remains, along with educational activities organised throughout the year. San Martín De La Vega has some of the most significant remains of these battles.
