Mejorada del Campo combines nature observation with an unusual building history. The two subject areas can be considered independently of one another. The Catedral de Justo is a unique building in Mejorada del Campo: over several decades, it was built by a single man from recycled materials, despite his having no architectural knowledge.

For your own planning, you can consider nature, walking, transport and culture as separate areas of focus and only then arrange them according to your personal interests. The different details address different planning questions without prescribing a particular order.

Nature

Part of the municipality of Mejorada del Campo lies within the protected Parque Regional del Sureste; this regional park includes the Lagunas de la Presa del río Henares in Mejorada del Campo. The Las Islillas nature area features wetlands, white poplar forests and a bird observatory. When planning your day, these landscape features can be organised as separate nature-related aspects.

When exploring Mejorada del Campo, you can consciously divide your focus: Las Islillas and the lagoons stand alongside the historical visit to San Fausto, the parish church and the Catedral de Justo. This keeps nature observation, religious buildings and the distinctive history of the site's origins as separate themes, allowing them to be weighted differently according to your personal interests.

Getting Around

You can consider the starting point and destination, route length and level of difficulty separately when making your personal plans.

Culture

The San Fausto chapel was established to house the saint's relics in a cenotaph made of multicoloured Italian marble. The parish church of Mejorada del Campo was built between the 16th and 17th centuries.

On 12 October 1961, Justo Gallego began constructing a chapel dedicated to the Virgen del Pilar on former agricultural land in Mejorada del Campo, as part of the Catedral de Justo. The Catedral de Justo is temporarily closed until the municipal permit has been fully processed. For personal planning, the building history and current status can be considered separately. The foundation work took five years; the inauguration took place in 1691.
