On the Trails

The route Por el Camino Viejo a Horcajuelo y las Huertas is a circular trail through orchards and hay meadows along the old path that connected Montejo de la Sierra with Horcajuelo. The route De la Ermita de la Soledad a la de Nazaret passes through former hay meadows and, on the descent, follows the livestock trail Cañada Real de las Merinas. Por la Dehesa Boyal runs through the Dehesa Boyal of Montejo de la Sierra, which continues to serve as pastureland for livestock. Culture

The Romería de Nuestra Señora de Nazaret features traditional costumes from the Sierra, jota music, singing, and dancing. It takes place on the last Saturday in May and proceeds in a procession from the church to the Ermita de Nazaret.

History

The Iglesia de San Pedro in Cátedra is a Renaissance church from the 15th century with a Mudéjar coffered ceiling and a 12th-century carving; it is classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural. The Ermita de la Soledad was first built in the 16th century and is located in the area known as Calvario, where the former Stations of the Cross from Montejo de la Sierra ended. The Fuente de los Tres Caños is a fountain built in the 19th century that formerly served as a watering trough for livestock. The Horno Suspendido is an example of the suspended bread ovens used in traditional houses. The Potro de Herrar is the only one of several livestock stocks in the town that has survived; it was used not only for shoeing animals but also for treating livestock such as cows and oxen.

The Ermita de Nazaret is mentioned in the Libro de Montería by Alfonso XI, the King of Castile who reigned from 1312 to 1350, as Santa María de Nacerni. It stands on a hill from which the entire valley can be seen and was understood as a place of spiritual retreat.
