History and Townscape

After the Battle of Brunete, only one house remained standing in Villanueva del Pardillo; it is known locally as “La Casona”. Today, La Casona is used as a cultural centre and municipal library.

The Church of San Lucas displays strong architectural unity with the other urban elements designed by José del Río; like them, it consists of plastered brickwork with very simple decoration. During the reconstruction of Villanueva del Pardillo planned as part of Regiones Devastadas, the Church of San Lucas was connected to the Plaza Mayor as a religious representation.

The Plaza Mayor is a small, south-facing square with a traditional Castilian arcade. Together with the town hall, it forms a civic ensemble characteristic of the Regiones Devastadas reconstruction programmes, which has remained almost unchanged to this day.

The Los Palacios archaeological site, a Roman wine-production centre, lies north of the town centre. The site dates from the middle of the 1st to the 4th century AD. In the Comunidad de Madrid, Los Palacios is the first complete torcularium that strictly follows Roman specifications both in its architectural design and in the technology used.

Culture and Events

The Romería de la Virgen del Soto takes place on the third Sunday in May and is part of the municipality’s identity as a tradition. It includes the traditional return procession to the Ermita at the paraje de la Fuente del Manchego; the Ermita was built by local residents in 1995. The Romería features traditional dances, dulzainas and tamboriles.

The patron saint festivities in honour of Saint Luke the Evangelist take place in mid-October, around 18 October. Their programme includes religious, cultural, musical, family and sporting activities.

The annual Semana Cultural of Villanueva del Pardillo offers concerts, open classes, performances and workshops for all age groups in February. The Auditorio Municipal “Sebastián Cestero”, which is part of the theatre network of the Comunidad de Madrid, also hosts concerts, theatre performances, dance and events for all age groups.

Pardinature is a nature programme held in September, featuring guided family routes, workshops, activities for children and astronomical observations.

Regional Cuisine

During the Gran Cocido Pardillano, more than 1,500 portions of traditional cocido are served for tasting at tables in the surroundings of Regiones Devastadas in March. Villanueva del Pardillo also takes part in the Ruta del Garbanzo Madrileño, in which local restaurants participate in every edition.
