Discover Villafranca del Castillo

Villafranca del Castillo can be discovered through very different facets: protected landscapes, Roman traces, Castilian squares, local festivals and regional cuisine exist here as distinct themes alongside one another. This creates not a uniform sightseeing programme, but a place whose character is made up of nature, history and living traditions.

Nature and Trails

Villanueva del Pardillo is located in the protected Parque Regional del Curso Medio del Guadarrama. The particularly protected Dehesa Boyal woodland is home to a diverse range of native flora and fauna, including a significant ash forest. Official Route 13 is also relevant when planning walks: it leads from Colmenarejo to Villanueva del Pardillo. The Ermita de la Virgen del Soto is associated with a traditional annual pilgrimage held on the third Sunday in May.

Roman Traces and Local History

Los Palacios is a Roman wine-production centre in Villanueva del Pardillo and also the first complete Roman torcularium in the Comunidad de Madrid. The archaeological site lies north of the town centre on the left bank of the Los Palacios stream, in a hilly landscape with olive groves and cereal cultivation. Those wishing to compare different historical layers will also find a reference to the town’s earlier history: Villanueva del Pardillo is mentioned in the Libro de la Montería by Alfonso XI; its foundation is therefore dated to before the plague in the mid-14th century.

Squares and Buildings

The Plaza Mayor is a small, square Castilian-style square with arcades and a southern orientation. Together with the Ayuntamiento, it forms a largely preserved civic ensemble characteristic of the reconstruction work carried out by Regiones Devastadas. La Casona was built around 1900 and partially destroyed during the Spanish Civil War. The surviving building is associated with the Battle of Brunete and now serves as a cultural centre and municipal library. In May 2009, it became fully the municipal library of Villanueva del Pardillo; it was later named Biblioteca Municipal Luis Parra.

Festivals and Activities

The patron-saint celebrations in honour of Saint Luke the Evangelist take place in mid-October, around 18 October. Their programme includes religious, musical, cultural and sporting events. Pardinature offers guided family routes, workshops, activities for children and astronomical observation sessions in the Parque Regional del Curso Medio del Río Guadarrama. The Summerbike Festival combines cycling competitions, demonstrations, activities for children, an exhibition area, food trucks and live music. This places quiet discoveries, community events and sport-focused dates alongside one another as clearly distinguishable themes.

Local Cuisine

At the Gran Cocido Pardillano, more than 1,500 portions of traditional cocido are served from 1:30 p.m. The portions can be collected at Plaza Míster Lodge and eaten at tables in the area around Regiones Devastadas. The traditional Caldereta, a meat stew, is prepared by participating residents and the local peñas and served after the proclamation ceremony of the patron-saint celebrations in honour of Saint Luke. Local restaurants in Villanueva del Pardillo take part in every edition of the Ruta del Garbanzo Madrileño.

Transport Connections

Bus route 626 connects Villanueva del Pardillo with Las Rozas, Majadahonda, including Hospital Puerta de Hierro, and Villanueva de la Cañada. Bus route 643 travels to Madrid and connects the town with the Moncloa transport interchange, platform 27, island 2. These two routes represent different arrival and onward-travel connections.
