Holiday apartment in Torremocha de Jarama: church art and landscape trails

Torremocha de Jarama can be explored through the parish church of San Pedro Apóstol: it is one of the few Romanesque examples in the region. The church was built in several phases from the 13th century onwards. Inside, there are wall paintings of the International Gothic style dating from the mid-15th century. They are considered the only surviving example of this kind in the Comunidad de Madrid and one of the few surviving examples in Castile.

History and hydraulic engineering

A fortified tower of Roman and early medieval origin has a masonry landing stage. This suggests that the site was used as a crossing over the River Jarama.

The historic canal was built between 1775 and 1799, was up to 12 kilometres long and connected the catchment areas of the Lozoya and Jarama rivers. It comprised twelve stone bridges, five aqueducts, an irrigation channel and ten watch houses for the canal guards. A large service building was also constructed in Torremocha de Jarama and was used seasonally as a residence. A mill was acquired by Manuel Castiñeiras in 1985 and subsequently restored several times.

Trails and landscape

The accessible Camino de las Huertas leads from Torremocha to Patones through vineyards and holm-oak landscapes in the Vega del Jarama. It reaches the gardens of Torremocha and the River Jarama.

The route along the Arroyo San Román begins and ends in Torremocha, follows the riverside vegetation and leads to a viewpoint over the Valle del Jarama as it climbs to Patones de Arriba. Along this route, it is possible to observe the transition from limestone terrain to predominantly slate-covered terrain.

The Ruta de las Minas leads to traces of local slate mining, including mine entrances and the former mule track along which the mineral was transported by pack animals. The Ruta del Canal de Cabarrús runs through the cereal steppes of the Vega del Jarama; remains of the historic canal facilities are scattered along the route.

Trails and paths also lead to Soto de Torremocha, passing centuries-old elm groves, holm oaks and poplars. For personal planning, the routes can be organised according to their different landscape and historical themes.

Agriculture and crafts

The Museo de la Agricultura contains more than 500 items illustrating agricultural traditions at local, regional and supraregional levels; not all items are on display. At the Torrearte craft centre, you can discover and purchase handicraft products made from ceramics, porcelain, sculpture, wicker, wood, metal, recycled paper and food-related products.

A cultural tour of the Museo de la Agricultura may include a tasting of typical regional products as well as a wine and oil tasting seminar.
