Rascafría: Monastic Culture, Water and Trails

Rascafría can be understood through both culture and nature. The Real Monasterio de Santa María de El Paular was founded in 1390 by the House of Trastámara as the first Carthusian monastery in Castile.

Culture and History

Since 1876, the Real Monasterio de Santa María de El Paular has been protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the category of National Monument. The monastery complex includes the church, the chapter house, the tabernacle-sanctuary, the refectory and the Cloister of Remembrance. A three-arched bridge made of granite blocks was probably built in the first half of the 18th century as a replacement for an older bridge.

Trails and Landscape

At El Bosque de Finlandia, there is a water feature along the path from Rascafría to El Paular, as well as birch, yew and holly trees. The El Paular y Los Batanes circular route is 4.3 kilometres long and starts and ends at the Los Cascajales car park in the centre of Rascafría. Along this route, you can see forests of Pyrenean oak and riverside vegetation.

The path from Rascafría to Oteruelo is slightly more than 2 kilometres long, runs without any incline and forms part of the Camino Natural. Ruta Verde 1 leads from Puerto de Los Cotos via El Paular to Rascafría. It can be travelled on foot, on horseback or by mountain bike; with sufficient snow, some sections can also be covered on skis. Different trail lengths and several modes of transport provide you with different points of reference for planning your own day.

The routes therefore differ not only in length but also in their mode of transport: a circular route remains tied to its starting point, while Ruta Verde 1 includes several modes of transport. This places different forms of trail exploration side by side without describing the same route.

Water and Nature

The Las Presillas recreational area has three river pools. Swimming is permitted exclusively in this area, and access to the recreational area is free of charge. The Peñalara Massif contains well-preserved glacial landforms that are considered unique in the Comunidad de Madrid.

The Cascadas del Purgatorio were formed by the erosion of the Arroyo del Aguilón. The water flows there between distinctive granite rock faces and dense forests of Scots pine.

Visitor Information

The Centro de Visitantes Valle de El Paular is located in Rascafría next to the Puente del Perdón and provides an information point for visitors. It is served by public bus routes 194 and 194A.
