La Hiruela – Oak Groves, Trails and Culture

The municipality of La Hiruela lies within the Sierra del Rincón Biosphere Reserve, in rugged terrain on the eastern slope of the Sierra de Somosierra and within the Río Jarama basin. The area includes centuries-old oak groves, birch stands, traditional orchards and meadows.

Nature and Landscape

The Robledal de La Hiruela is an important biodiversity area dominated by old Pyrenean oaks and also including birch and blackthorn. A notable oak in the Robledal is described as the thickest oak in the Community of Madrid; it is approximately 25 metres tall and around 800 years old.

The Mirador del Molino offers an elevated view of the recreation area and the Río Jarama, which flows through La Hiruela. The A la Vera del Jarama route can begin in La Hiruela, passes through riverside woodland and river meadows, and reaches the La Hiruela grain mill with its recreation area on the banks of the Río Jarama, surrounded by cherry and elder trees.

Trails and Nature Experiences

Hirubotánica is a community initiative in La Hiruela that includes botanical walks, workshops and photographic documentation of local plant life and the knowledge associated with it. The Senda de la Fuente Lugar runs alongside orchards with apple, blackberry, cherry and large centuries-old pear trees, and reaches the former communal washing places at Fuente Lugar.

The Senda de las Eras y la Pila de Riego is a 2.7-kilometre circular trail with a low level of difficulty and a stated duration of one hour. The Senda por las Eras y la Pila de Riego leads to viewpoints overlooking La Hiruela, the Río Jarama valley and the wooded oak-covered slopes of the surrounding valleys.

The GR-303 long-distance trail crosses the Sierra del Rincón Biosphere Reserve in its entirety, passes through its five municipalities and combines nature observation, panoramic views, and ethnographic elements of rural architecture and traditional land management. The circular trail, viewpoints, botanical walks and long-distance trail offer different time and thematic focuses when planning.

A visitor car park is available at the entrance to La Hiruela. The El Molino Harinero recreation area can be reached via the mill route or from the road.

Culture and History

La Hiruela preserves a distinctive rural architectural character, with houses made of stone, earth and oak wood from the village oak, whose structure has undergone very little alteration. The first historical references to the La Hiruela grain mill date from the second half of the 18th century; it was restored in 2001, with the millstones and the building structure reconstructed.

The Senda Los Oficios de la Vida leads to the ethnographically significant sites of Molino Harinero, Colmenar Tradicional and Carbonera in La Hiruela. The Ethnological Museum reconstructs a 17th-century rural dwelling on the upper floor and displays objects donated by local residents, historical photographs and an audio guide.

The Iglesia de San Miguel Arcángel has a single-nave layout with a semicircular triumphal arch, a main chapel covered by a barrel vault and a bell gable with three bells.

Festivals and Local Traditions

The Fiesta de la Recolección del Pero has been held on a Saturday in autumn since 2006; the exact date depends on the weather-dependent ripening of the fruit. It includes demonstrations of the grafting technique, tastings of different apple varieties and local dishes made with local apple varieties.

La Hiruela’s patron saint festival honours the Virgen del Rosario and takes place on the first weekend of August. Baño de Bosque y sus Sabores includes a guided walk through selected woodland areas and a meal at Casa Aldabada.
