Miraflores de la Sierra is part of the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park and also of the Upper Manzanares River Basin Regional Park, a protected natural area. Monte Aguirre near Miraflores de la Sierra is home to extensive stands of Pyrenean oak. In the higher areas of Miraflores de la Sierra, Spanish ibex are easy to spot, while griffon vultures are among the town’s noteworthy birds. The Fuente del Cura–Parada del Rey–Fuente del Cura route is intended for observing wildlife and plant life during the walk; outdoor activities in Miraflores de la Sierra also include horse-riding routes.

Nature

The Fuente del Cura recreation area is located on the M-611 between Miraflores and Rascafría, next to the town centre of Miraflores de la Sierra. It has paths, a kiosk, parking spaces, tables, benches, rubbish bins, containers and a fountain. The SL 03-1 Ruta al pinar de Aguirre por la Berrocosa route is 7.5 kilometres long, takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, and is rated easy. Trails and Elevation

The Barranco del río Miraflores y Cerro de los Santos walking route begins at the Fuente del Pilar on Calle Norte. The Fuente del Cura–Hueco de San Blas cycling route is approximately 24.5 kilometres long and has a rideability index of 100%. The Ascensión a La Najarra SL-04 route leads to Puerto de la Morcuera at an elevation of 1,796 metres and along the northern ridge of La Najarra to a geodetic point on the ridge at an elevation of 2,105 metres. The various routes thus combine short walks, medium-length trails, cycling tours and pronounced high-elevation destinations as clearly distinct ways of exploring the area.

Culture and Local History

In the town centre, the Paseo Aleixandrino begins at Plaza de España and follows in the footsteps of Vicente Aleixandre. At the Álamo installation, a bronze replica of Miraflores de la Sierra’s famous century-old poplar, Vicente Aleixandre’s poem “El Álamo” can be read around it. The Fuente Nueva de Miraflores de la Sierra was built in 1791 in the Baroque style from hewn granite blocks. The Iglesia de la Asunción de Nuestra Señora is an example of Late Gothic architecture associated with the House of Infantado. The Teatro Auditorio Centro de Arte Villa de Miraflores stages theatre performances, concerts, dance performances, recitals, talks and conferences throughout the year.

The Gruta de Nuestra Señora de Begoña was recognised by the Community of Madrid as a site of tourist interest. The open-air chapel, built around a natural rock, includes an altar, gardens, ponds and sculptural groups. The ruins of the Molino de Salustiano can be accessed via the restored bridge over the Miraflores River. The Fuente de los Borricos was formerly a resting place used by forestry workers and their animals on their way back from work. The fountain monument on the Ctra. de Rascafría is dedicated to Antonio Robledo Palomino, who was known as “El Tío Francachela”. In La Colonia, renowned hotels and villas for summer stays have been built since the last quarter of the 19th century.

The Gran día de la Matanza del Cerdo takes place in February and includes the preparation and tasting of various pork products. In November, it is followed by the Muestra Gastronómica de la Caza y las Setas, featuring dishes prepared by local restaurateurs.
