Paracuellos De Jarama: Nature, Trails and Culture

Paracuellos de Jarama reveals its landscape particularly well along the PR-M 45 El Pinar de los Berrocales route. The 3.5-kilometre circular trail has an estimated walking time of one hour. From the summit, there are views of the Los Berrocales pine grove, the Jarama riverbanks and Madrid.

Nature and Trails

Monte El Calderillo is the municipality's largest pine forest and covers more than 50 hectares. A second notable route begins at a precisely specified starting point: the PR-M 41 Lagunas y Belvis de Jarama route starts on the Camino de la Veguilla drovers' road near the roundabout at its junction with the M-111 road at kilometre 8.2, opposite the El Picón II residential development in Paracuellos de Jarama.

As a 6.3-kilometre circular trail, the PR-M 41 has an estimated walking time of 1 hour and 25 minutes and runs in sections through the protected riverside zone of the Jarama. A branch leads from the route to an observation area at the Lagunas de Belvis. The trail ends shortly before the entrance to Parque Colonos in Belvis de Jarama; in Belvis, you can visit the Museo Etnológico.

The Lagunas de Belvis are classified by the Community of Madrid as wetlands of special interest. The complex comprises 25 basins covering a total of 54.4 hectares, including 3.9 hectares of wetland area. The two circular trails therefore differ considerably in length and walking time and can be considered as separate themes for daily planning.

The PR-M 44 Lavadero y Guindaleras route begins at Plaza de San Pedro in Paracuellos de Jarama. Since 2025, the “Marchas de los Senderos de Paracuellos” programme has organised guided hikes every quarter.

Culture and History

The Iglesia de San Vicente Mártir on Plaza de la Constitución in Paracuellos de Jarama is accessible. The tradition of Corpus Christi also continues in Paracuellos, with altars being set up in the streets for the occasion.

The historic washhouse of Paracuellos was used until the 1980s and was later restored by the municipality together with the Fuente Seca. The Castillo de Malsobaco was a simple fortification with a single tower that housed a small garrison to defend the surrounding area.

The original settlement centre of Paracuellos developed on the slopes of the Castillo de Malsobaco. The Palacio de Medinaceli was built during Paracuellos's cultural and economic revival in the Early Modern period, using the wealth of the Pardo-de la Cerda family.

The Museo de Usos y Costumbres Etnográficas de Belvis (MUCEB) was established in 1995 in a former rural dwelling and contains items donated by local residents. Along the PR-M 45 El Pinar de los Berrocales route, the Bunker de la Boca de las Zorras is designated as a landscape and historic attraction.
