Alameda del Valle: Nature, Culture and Trails

The entire municipality of Alameda del Valle is fully included in the zoning of the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park. The higher-altitude areas belong to the national park, while the rest of the municipality is part of the peripheral protection zone.

Nature

The Valle Alto del Lozoya has numerous signposted trails, recreational and leisure areas, viewpoints, and self-guided interpretation routes. Along its course through Alameda del Valle, the Río Lozoya is included in the trout waters zone of the Community of Madrid. Different trail lengths, durations and difficulty levels provide a concrete basis for comparing the days you have planned.

Culture and History

Las Antiguas Escuelas is a renovated former school building from the mid-20th century and now houses the Aula Polivalente y de Difusión Turística. The Sala de exposiciones Antiguas Escuelas features a permanent exhibition, live birdwatching cameras and a municipal model.

The Centro de Interpretación de la Vida Tradicional del Valle Alto del Lozoya presents local traditions and displays part of the municipal collection of decorative arts and traditional crafts across three floors. The parish church of Santa Marina Virgen y Mártir contains, among other works, figures of Santa Marina and Santa Ana, including a figure of Santa Ana dating from the 13th century.

The parish church of Santa Marina Virgen y Mártir was begun in the 16th century under the direction of master builder Juan de la Piedra; its construction is attributed to the period from the 16th to the 18th century. The Ermita de Santa Ana is a well-preserved 18th-century building located about 3 km south of the centre of Alameda del Valle, along the path beside the Arroyo de Santa Ana.

Trails and Local Stories

The Ruta a Arroyo de la Saúca is an approximately 6 km circular trail with an estimated duration of 4 hours, 200 metres of elevation gain and a medium difficulty level. The Ruta urbana por los Recuerdos de Alameda is an approximately 1.5 km circular route leading to fourteen stops at buildings, former workplaces and meeting places of the residents of Alameda del Valle.

The Ruta Urbana del Arroyo de La Saúca is an approximately 1 km one-way trail with a low difficulty level. The two shorter trails and the longer circular route therefore clearly differ in route format, time required and level of challenge.

Traditions and Mushrooms

Typical meadow mushroom species are found in Alameda del Valle, including king oyster mushrooms, fairy ring mushrooms and wild champignons. Numerous typical species, such as boletes and níscalos, grow in the pine forests. Alameda del Valle and the Valle Alto del Lozoya in general are considered suitable places to enjoy mushroom-based dishes.

In connection with Santa Ana, a mass and the traditional auction take place; afterwards, the town hall organises a traditional paella in the adjoining meadow.

Alameda del Valle is served by two interurban bus lines: Line 194 connects Madrid with Rascafría, while line 194A connects Buitrago del Lozoya with Rascafría.
