Villaviciosa De Odón – Calatalifa is a protected archaeological zone and a material testament to Andalusian culture southwest of the town. The settlement was inhabited from the 9th century until the Castilian conquest; archaeological research also provides evidence of an Emirate-era and even earlier settlement.
Culture and History
The Castillo de Villaviciosa de Odón houses the Archivo Histórico del Ejército del Aire y del Espacio; guided visits can be requested through the municipal administration.
Another archaeological site is Monte de la Villa in the northwest of Villaviciosa De Odón, on the edge of the M-511 road. Locally, this road is known as the „Ruta de los pantanos“.
The historic architecture includes the Casa Palacio Manuel Godoy, a 17th-century house palace in Villaviciosa De Odón. It houses temporary exhibitions and a café-restaurant.
El Forestal is located next to the Castillo de Villaviciosa de Odón and served as an experimental laboratory for the first students of the Escuela de Ingenieros.
The festivities in honour of the patron saint San Sebastián take place on 20 January and are of regional tourist interest. They include a mass, a procession and traditional pujas.

The destinations mentioned can be classified by type: archaeological sites and historic buildings offer different ways of exploring the town’s history, while museums, parks and the zoo form distinct destination types. This distinction helps to weigh culture, green spaces and wildlife observation separately when planning a day.
Different focuses are available for selecting activities: Calatalifa and Monte de la Villa belong to the field of archaeology, while the castle, house palace and El Forestal showcase historic buildings and their respective uses. Museums, parks and the zoo broaden this range. The location descriptions distinguish between the immediate vicinity, the surrounding area and the wider regional area. The festival tradition on 20 January stands separately as an event with a clearly defined date.
