Los Molinos – Mountain Village in the Guadarrama

Los Molinos surprises visitors with a botanical peculiarity: Los Molinos is home to 797 hectares of Cambroño (Adenocarpus hispanicus), representing the world’s largest concentration of this species. Between the river valley, mountain village, historic buildings and festival traditions, different reasons for visiting come together in this town.

Landscape

Los Molinos is located in the upper valley of the Guadarrama River at the foot of the Sierra de Guadarrama Nature Park. The Pino de San Roque, also known as Pino Solitario, is designated as an Árbol Singular by the Community of Madrid. The town centre of Los Molinos preserves the character of a traditional mountain village, with irregularly laid-out streets and squares as well as stone buildings. As a result, different landscape and townscape themes exist side by side within the town: the valley with its river, the nature park, the distinctive plant and the organically developed built environment.

In addition to the Guadarrama River, Parque de Francisco Rodríguez Padilla offers a shaded area for walking. The landscape context, townscape and specific walking area therefore provide distinct ways of approaching Los Molinos. Culture and history

The Capilla de San José is a Herrerian-Neoclassical hermitage dating from 1737. The Iglesia parroquial de la Purísima Concepción dates from 1570 and has an 18th-century Baroque, gilded and polychrome altarpiece. The two religious buildings thus combine different periods and stylistic features within the townscape.

Since 2017, the Casa-Museo Julio Escobar has served as a house museum dedicated to the writer. Architecture and literature provide two different cultural points of reference here. Local festival traditions are another feature: the Fiesta de San Sebastián la Vaquilla has historical evidence dating back to the 16th century and is recognised as a festival of regional tourist interest. The Romería de la Virgen del Espino has been celebrated since 1962.

The events differ in their historical reach, recognition status and continuity of celebration. The Los Molinos en Amarillo festival takes place in April and May and includes guided routes, horse rides, concerts and activities to raise awareness of the protection of the native Cambroño. In this way, cultural and historical sightseeing and time-limited event offerings remain separate subject areas.
