Torrelodones – Culture, History and Trails

Torrelodones can be explored through historic buildings, protected cultural landscapes and an extensive network of trails. A particularly notable landmark is the Atalaya de Torrelodones: it was built in the 9th century as part of a Muslim defensive network of watchtowers during the Umayyad period of al-Andalus and is one of the best-preserved Islamic watchtowers in the Madrid region. At the same time, it is considered the oldest and most symbolic element of Torrelodones’ historical heritage.

Culture

The Casa de Cultura also brings together several cultural institutions. It includes the Teatro Bulevar, with a capacity of almost 500 spectators, two exhibition halls with monthly changing exhibitions of painting, sculpture and photography, as well as the municipal music and dance school.

The Presa de El Gasco provides an extensive historic setting. It lies in a granite gorge on the Guadarrama River and forms part of a cultural landscape that is classified as a cultural landscape and protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural. It extends across the municipalities of Galapagar, Torrelodones and Las Rozas.

The cultural landscape includes the dam and the Canal del Guadarrama. Of the canal’s originally planned route, around 25 kilometres were opened from the area around the dam to the centre of Las Rozas. The ensemble also includes aqueducts, culverts, access paths and a towpath intended for use as a service road.

History

Several historic testimonies represent different periods and functions. The Palacio del Canto del Pico is designated as a Bien de Interés Cultural. It is currently abandoned and in a severely dilapidated condition; it is also privately owned and only partially accessible.

The Mina de Arroyo de Trofas, also known as Mina Rosa María and “mina de U-Cu del Arroyo de Trofas”, is a former copper mine on the Arroyo de Trofas along the former road from Torrelodones to El Pardo. Its recognisable remains include a spoil heap, shafts and a prospecting trench. Despite increasing vegetation, these structures remain clearly visible. The mine is privately owned and only partially accessible.

The Molino de Juan Mingo was probably in operation from the 16th century until the 19th century or the beginning of the 20th century. The surviving remains include a weir, the azud, a feeder channel, an Aceña shaft approximately 3 metres deep, the 22 × 15-metre sawmill, the stone abutments of the mill bridge and spoil heaps. This site is also privately owned and only partially accessible.

The historical context also extends to the town’s routes and festivals. Torrelodones is part of the Ruta Imperial, which partly follows the historic route used by Felipe II in the 16th century on his journeys between Madrid and San Lorenzo de El Escorial. The town is also part of the Ruta de los Castillos, Fortalezas y Atalayas, in which the Atalaya de Torrelodones is particularly highlighted. The Fuente del Caño was built in 1591 during the reign of Felipe II, together with the Abrevadero, and follows the Herrerian style.

Torrelodones’ patron saint festivals take place in summer: the Virgen del Carmen is celebrated in July, followed by the Asunción de Nuestra Señora and San Roque in August.

Trails and Landscape

For non-motorised activities, the municipal Red de Sendas network is available, with 14 trails. The trails were laid out along existing cycle paths, livestock routes such as the Cordel de Hoyo de Manzanares and the Cordel de Valladolid, historic routes such as part of the Camino del Pardillo, and paths and tracks on publicly owned land.

Other places at the same destination level are La Cabrera, El Berrueco, Horcajo De La Sierra, Torremocha De Jarama, Valdelaguna, Titulcia, Valdeolmos and Rozas De Puerto Real.

The Embalse de los Peñascales and its surroundings feature lush riverside vegetation, including ash trees, willows, poplars and reeds, and provide a refuge for a wide variety of birds.
