Discover Titulcia – Archaeology, Wine and Nature

Titulcia preserves an archaeological site with a settlement history spanning from the Bronze Age to the present day, with the pre-Roman and Roman periods being particularly noteworthy.

Culture and History

In 2012, the archaeological site of Titulcia was protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the “Archaeological Zone” category and included in the network of archaeological sites open to visitors in the Autonomous Community of Madrid. Archaeological investigations have identified settlement areas, necropolises, production areas, places of worship and defensive elements there.

The Centro de Interpretación Arqueológica de Titulcia, the Archaeological Interpretation Centre of Titulcia, presents the development of the site and representative finds from the excavations. Visitors can view these exhibits there. The centre opened in March 2015; a second phase of expansion was completed in summer 2018.

The religious buildings also bear various historical traces. The Church of Santa María Magdalena houses the painting “El Tránsito de María Magdalena” by Jorge Manuel Theotocopuli. It appears to date from the 16th century and was rebuilt after the Civil War. The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Soledad in Titulcia dates from the 18th century.

The Puente de Piedra spans the Tajuña River and also dates from the 18th century. Together with the church and the ermita, it offers another way to explore the town’s history, without reducing the individual buildings to the same period.

Places of Special Interest

The Cueva de la Luna, a former bodega, is one of Titulcia’s historically interesting buildings. It is believed to have been built in the 16th century on the orders of Cisneros. It consists of a dome and several passageways; archaeological remains from various cultures have been found inside.

Wine and Regional Products

Bodega Viña Bayona offers guided tours of its facilities. These are followed by a tasting of its own products with an aperitif; the tours and tastings are intended for groups of at least ten people.

During opening hours, the bodega’s own wines and other local products can be purchased there. Wine is therefore an independent thematic focus in Titulcia alongside archaeology and architectural history.

Nature and Hiking

The natural surroundings of Titulcia lie within the Parque Regional del Sureste. When planning a day, the themes of culture, wine and nature can be considered separately and combined according to the desired focus.

The official hiking route “De Titulcia a Chinchón” is a linear hike from Titulcia to Chinchón. Its clearly defined direction distinguishes this hiking option from the town’s culture- and wine-related attractions.
