Valdemoro: Culture, History and Nature Trails

Historic religious buildings and clearly mapped nature routes give Valdemoro two distinctly different sides. Among the historic buildings is the Monastery of the Clarisas Franciscanas de la Encarnación, which was protected as a monument in the Bien de Interés Cultural category by Decree 105/2016 of the Regional Government of Madrid, dated 8 November 2016.

Culture

After construction was completed, the community moved into the new monastery on 19 May 1616 amid great celebrations and a solemn mass. The monastery church has a Latin-cross floor plan with a three-part nave, a transept and a large high choir.

The Fuente de la Villa was built in 1605 by the Valdemoro council using stone from Colmenar de Oreja. The historic townscape also includes the municipal washhouse, a building made of exposed brick with masonry infill.

The parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción was declared a historic-artistic monument in 1981. Its frescoes in the central nave were created by the Madrid-based artist Van Der Pere.

The Ermita del Santísimo Cristo de la Salud is a Baroque building from the 18th century and originally developed from a 17th-century wayside chapel on the former Camino Real to Toledo. Inside, it contains a Baroque altarpiece with Solomonic columns, acanthus leaves and grape ornaments.

Nature

The Bolitas del Airón natural area covers 44 hectares and is home to the region’s most important reserve of the Russian olive tree Elaeagnus angustifolia. This natural area includes a circular route more than 3,200 metres long, consisting of a perimeter path and several connecting paths, making it suitable for hiking, jogging and cycling. A visitor car park has space for 200 vehicles.

Trails

The four signposted nature routes in Valdemoro – Bolitas del Airón, Canteras de Yeso, Entrecerros and Cerro de la Mira – are circular routes and can be completed on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. The Bolitas del Airón route is an easy circular trail 12.19 kilometres long. Canteras de Yeso is an easy circular trail 8.29 kilometres long, while Entrecerros is 15.60 kilometres long and has a moderate difficulty level. For personal planning, the routes can be compared by length and, where indicated, by difficulty.

Festivals

The San Marcos festival is celebrated on 25 April in the Bolitas del Airón natural park. It combines a tradition dating back to the 17th century and associated with farming communities with public leisure and entertainment activities.
