Sojuela: Ice Houses, Forests and Trails

In Sojuela, the Casa de la Nieve de Moncalvillo Interpretation Centre explains the history and operation of the ice houses through information panels, a video and a model.

Culture

The Neveras de Moncalvillo complex comprises five restored ice houses that can be visited. The Neveras de Moncalvillo were built towards the end of the 16th century and remained in operation until the beginning of the 20th century. The Neveras de Moncalvillo are protected and have been prepared for visits; trails with information panels provide details about the ice houses and charcoal kilns.

The Casa de la Nieve de Moncalvillo Interpretation Centre offers visits for school classes and groups. Here, history appears not only on information panels, but also in the preserved facilities and the accompanying trails.

Nature

The Casa de la Nieve de Moncalvillo Interpretation Centre houses a collection of 580 nocturnal and 112 diurnal butterfly specimens from Sojuela.

The trails around Casa de la Nieve pass through dense forests of pine, oak and beech trees. The fauna in the area around the Balsa de Sojuela recreational area includes roe deer, red deer, wild boar, squirrels, sparrowhawks and buzzards.

The Balsa de Sojuela recreational area can be reached via a road branching off the LR-341. The area around the Balsa de Sojuela recreational area contains a forest of Pyrenean oaks (Quercus pyrenaica); it also has a signposted arboretum and two marked trails.

Things to Do

The Sendero de las Neveras is 7 km long, takes approximately 4 hours and 30 minutes, and has a high difficulty level. The trail begins in Sojuela next to the Church of Santa María del Pópulo and reaches the Balsa de Sojuela recreational area after 20 minutes.

The Sendero de los Arrieros is considerably shorter: the forest trail is 1.25 km long, has a low difficulty level and connects Moncalvillo Green Golf with Sojuela.

The Ruta de las Bodegas cycling route is 15.79 km long and has a low technical difficulty level and a medium physical difficulty level. The Centro BTT Moncalvillo complements it with a freely accessible network of routes with a total length of 250 km, extending across ten municipalities, including Sojuela.

The Club de Golf Sojuela is a par-72 golf course with four lakes connected by an existing watercourse, set in a forest of oaks, holm oaks and pine trees.
