Almarza De Cameros: Trails, Chapels and Rural History

Almarza De Cameros showcases its traditions in motion: during the September procession, the Virgin is carried from the parish church to the chapel accompanied by the local sword dance; on San Juan, the route is covered in the opposite direction. The patron saint festivities take place on 14 and 15 September in honour of Santa Cruz and Nuestra Señora del Valle.

Culture and History

The former school building in Almarza houses the Museo Escuela. The residents assembled the collection in 1996. It conveys what school life was like in these villages and thus preserves an insight into their shared everyday life.

The Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Valle is an 18th-century chapel dedicated to Nuestra Señora del Valle. From there, it offers expansive views of the municipality’s mountains.

The Iglesia de la Virgen del Campillo is a 16th-century building made of masonry and dressed stone, with a portico featuring round arches and a paved floor. The church contains a Romanesque baptismal font. It also has an altarpiece created by Simeón de Cambray towards the end of the 16th century, with scenes from the life of Jesus, from the Annunciation to Mary through to the Passion.

The Hoyuela Tumulus is an oval mound approximately 14 metres long, about 9 metres wide and approximately 1.70 metres high.
