Clavijo between rocky landscapes and architectural heritage

Clavijo can be explored through its rocky landscapes and architectural heritage. Clavijo is home to the Peñas de Clavijo, a formation of vertical, linear and parallel rock ridges shaped by the almost vertical bedding of the strata and differential erosion.

Nature

The Peñas de Iregua, Leza y Jubera nature reserve extends across 12 municipalities, including Clavijo. The Senda de las Peñas de Clavijo trail leads via the Ermita de Santiago to Monte Laturce, offers wide views of the Peñas de Leza and the Ebro basin, and continues to the ruins of the former Monasterio de San Prudencio. In Clavijo and the surrounding area, there are mountain biking routes and trails for cycling in the mountains or through the countryside.

Culture and history

Since 1931, the Castillo de Clavijo has been protected as a Property of Cultural Interest in the Monument category. The Real Basílica de Santiago is an 18th-century Baroque building on the southern slope of Monte Laturce. The Iglesia parroquial de La Asunción is a single-nave Renaissance church with Gothic elements in its southern window. The remains of three historic ice houses can be found in Clavijo: two in the La Planilla area and one in the Pozas area.

The ruins of the Monasterio de San Prudencio between Clavijo and Leza de Río Leza on Monte Laturce include the remains of a Cistercian church from the late 12th century, a later 17th-century church and a large surrounding building complex. A local celebration includes a procession from the village to the Basílica de Santiago, followed by a mass. On the eve of the celebration, a large bonfire is lit on the esplanade of the Cruz on Monte Laturce; afterwards, residents gather for a communal Chuletada.

Activities

The Escuela de Clavijo climbing area has around 125 routes with very different levels of difficulty. On the French grading scale, the routes range from grade 3 to 8a+. The range of activities can be considered separately when planning your trip: climbing, hiking and cycling each offer a different focus, without requiring you to commit to a single theme.

The M-4A regional bus route connects Clavijo with Alberite via La Unión de los Tres Ejércitos.
