Nalda: Culture, Nature and Trails along the Iregua

Castillo de Nalda-Señorío de Cameros was built in the 12th century. Its towers, buttresses and high walls are connected to its military and aristocratic past.

Culture

The Arco de la Villa forms part of the village’s medieval fortifications. It is a pointed arch beneath a square tower with a projecting watch turret.

The Dólmenes de Peña Guerra are restored prehistoric megalithic monuments. Peña Guerra I is a passage grave with a polygonal chamber beneath a burial mound and is dated to approximately 3,450 years ago.

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción has three naves, a five-sided apse and stellar-ribbed vaults. The nearby Ermita de Nª. Sª. de Villavieja is a Baroque building from the 17th century that incorporates reused elements from the 16th century; its vaults date from 1689.

Admission to the Conjunto Rupestre de Los Palomares is free; the municipality of Nalda organises guided visits there.

Trails

Nalda has an audio route that presents the history of the village through a blend of documentary and fictional storytelling. Residents, researchers from La Rioja and artists from the region participate in it.

The Vía Romana del Iregua follows the ancient Roman route along the Iregua River through riverside landscapes, orchards and areas with fruit trees. The Senderos con historia project is dedicated to restoring, promoting and signposting local trails.

The Chorrón de San Marcos is a waterfall on the Torredano River that forms a curtain-like cascade over a wetland pool. The Colonia Buitrera de Peña Soto comprises more than 100 pairs of vultures; they can be observed from the foot of the rock below, near the Fuente del Arca.
