Lumbreras: Vacation Apartment, Circular Routes and Culture

Lumbreras can be explored on a self-guided tour through its streets and its transhumant past. “A Walk through Lumbreras” leads to points connected with this history. The route is 2.2 kilometers long and includes eleven stops featuring cultural, natural and ethnographic attractions. Different route lengths and themes make it easier to compare options when planning your own day.

Culture

The Iglesia Parroquial de San Bartolomé was built at the beginning of the 16th century and completely rebuilt in the 17th century. Its furnishings include a Baroque organ dating from the late 17th century. The interior can be accessed through a paved portico with an iron grille.

In the surroundings of Lumbreras, a permanent exhibition displays ethnographic objects from the former villages of Pajares and San Andrés, as well as a funerary stele from the 1st century AD. Celebrations in honor of Saint Bartholomew are documented for August 24.

Nature and Activities

The Parque Natural Sierra de Cebollera encompasses the municipality of Lumbreras and the associated villages of San Andrés and El Horcajo. In Lumbreras de Cameros, the Parque de Aventura Sierra de Cameros is located in the heart of this nature park. It has four courses with balance challenges, two for families and two sports courses.

The glacial formations of the Sierra de Cebollera known as “hoyos” are located at elevations above 2,000 meters. The Parque Natural Sierra de Cebollera is home to Iberian gray partridges, forest raptors, roe deer, red deer and wild boar; otters and trout also live in its rivers.

Trails and Circular Routes

The Sendero de Lumbreras y sus aldeas offers several circular hikes. These include a 4.7-kilometer loop from and back to San Andrés via the Chozo del Perrón, as well as a 4-kilometer loop from and back to Lumbreras via El Hoyo. The signposted Vía Romana del Iregua includes the Villoslada–Lumbreras and Lumbreras–Puerto de Piqueras stages.

On the Vía Romana del Iregua, the route crosses the Piqueras River on a bridge and then climbs toward Lumbreras. The abandoned hamlet of El Hoyo is also located in the surroundings of Lumbreras. Remains of buildings have been preserved there; the site can be reached on foot in just over an hour. The Senda autoguiada de las majadas is a short circular walk where several reconstructed shepherds’ huts can be visited.

Transhumance

The Centro de Interpretación de la Trashumancia is located in Venta de Piqueras on the N-111 at kilometer 273 in Lumbreras de Cameros. It presents an audiovisual program and original ethnographic material about transhumance. The center also provides information about transhumance routes, customs, beliefs and oral traditions.
