Aldeanueva de Ebro: Wine, Festivals and Culture

In Aldeanueva de Ebro, the Wine Museum is housed in the restored Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Portal, which was converted into the first wine museum in La Rioja Baja. The exhibition presents educational content about local wine production, as well as traditional equipment and tools used in agriculture and viticulture. Wine and Regional Cuisine

The local cuisine of Aldeanueva de Ebro is based on products from pig slaughtering, as well as fruit and vegetable products. Mantecosas are local pastries made from flour, eggs, milk and sugar, which are mainly prepared during Carnival.

The Feria Entreviñas has been held on the first weekend of June since 2008. It includes walks through the vineyards, tastings, culinary accompaniments, winery visits, workshops and exhibitions. The Jornadas del Vino y la Viña offer talks about wine, a public tasting of wines from local wineries and introductory wine-tasting courses. By prior reservation, Temerario Vinos offers a visit to the vineyards in Aldeanueva de Ebro, with a tasting of the wines in the respective vineyard.

The Mirador del Viñedo is a freely accessible observation tower offering wide views over the wine-growing area and the town of Aldeanueva de Ebro.

Festivals and Dates

The Fiestas de Invierno run from 31 December to 6 January and include bull-running events, a craft fair featuring products made from grape derivatives, concerts, and activities for children, young people and sports. During the Hogueras de San Antón on 16 January, fires are lit in the streets and chuletillas, chistorra and potatoes are roasted.

The Fiestas de la Virgen de los Remedios include bull-running events, dances, a Mass and a procession on 7 and 8 September. The Fiestas de San Bartolomé feature parades, floats, giants and big-head figures, bull-running events, dances and fireworks.

Culture and Townscape

The Iglesia de San Bartolomé was built from brick from 1573 onwards by the master builder Domingo de Yarza, following a Renaissance design by Pérez de Solarte. Its south portal dates from 1728 and is designed in the Baroque style. The church’s Atrium Fosal contains sculptures, mosaics and a stone pavement.

The Ruta Miguel Angel Sainz is a tour through the town centre of Aldeanueva de Ebro, during which visitors can see the works created by him and his workshop; the workshop is run by his niece and student, María Pilar. The Monumento de La Plaza de España features sculptures on an upper balustrade symbolising the seasons, the hours of the day and the ages of humankind. The main door of the Plaza de Toros Municipal de Aldeanueva de Ebro was created by Miguel Ángel Sáinz.

Routes and Getting There

The urban route “Entre Copas” is signposted for tourists and allows visitors to take a self-guided tour through the municipality to the local sights. The Camino Natural del Ebro is connected in this context with stage 19.1 of the GR 99.

Aldeanueva de Ebro can be reached via the N-232. In one direction are Calahorra, 12 km away, Logroño, 59 km away, and Bilbao, 220 km away; in the other direction are Alfaro, 10 km away, Tudela, 25 km away, Zaragoza, 110 km away, and Barcelona, 450 km away.
