Discover Munilla: Dinosaur Footprints and Holiday Apartments

Munilla is part of the biosphere reserve. At Peña Portillo, a structure protects one of the most interesting and best-preserved collections of dinosaur footprints in La Rioja. The Barranco de la Canal dinosaur tracksite can be reached from the entrance to Munilla in the direction of San Vicente via a drivable track and along a distance of 2.5 km.

Nature

Cycling excursions are possible on the paths in Hayedo de Santiago. One of the possible walks from Munilla leads to the Nevero. The GR 93 Sierras de La Rioja includes a 20 km stage between Munilla and San Román. When planning, you can directly compare the different route lengths of 2.5 and 20 kilometres. La Nevera is a medieval stone ice storehouse near Munilla’s built-up area. The restored access to La Nevera is a short walking path offering views of Munilla.

Culture

The public washhouse is located on Calle San Miguel next to the Río Manzanares. The Museo del Cántaro is located in the lower rooms of the Casino de Munilla. Munilla’s water-related cultural heritage includes mills, fulling mills and factories connected with the town’s industrial past. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Munilla had important cloth workshops that developed in the context of La Mesta and transhumance.

In the Las Vargas area, some buildings from former chocolate factories have been preserved. The Festival de Jazz de Munilla is a classic summer event in the municipality and takes place outdoors on Plaza de San Miguel around 15 August.

History

A single-nave Baroque chapel from the late 17th century houses an image of the Virgen de la Soledad, the patron saint of Munilla. One of Munilla’s churches contains a Hispano-Flemish image of the Virgen de Belén and the Conjutorio balcony loggia. A church in Munilla was built at the beginning of the 16th century in the style of the Catholic Monarchs and features partial walls and a Gothic-style portal dating from between 1400 and 1450.

A cut-stone bridge with two semicircular arches crosses the Río Manzanares; it was built at the end of the 15th or in the middle of the 16th century.

Getting There

Munilla can be reached via the LR-115 road; a turnoff from it leads to the LR-484 regional road. Autobuses Jiménez S.L. operates a bus service connecting Munilla with Arnedo, Calahorra, Logroño and Soria.
