Huércanos reveals its history in remarkably varied forms. The Rollo Jurisdiccional dates back to the privilege granted to Huércanos by Juan II in 1443. Construction work on the Iglesia Parroquial de San Pedro Apóstol began in June 1554; the building programme was completed in 1747.

Culture

Built of dressed stone, the Iglesia Parroquial de San Pedro Apóstol has a two-bay nave, a transept, a five-sided octagonal apse and star-ribbed vaults. The presbytery contains a Rococo choir stall ensemble, while the interior also includes several altarpieces from the 17th and 18th centuries.

The Ermita de San Pantaleón was built after the Cofradía de San Pantaleón was founded in 1657. According to local tradition, there is a brick there that young men and women step on with their right foot in order to get married.

The Agua de las 24 horas procession takes place in Huércanos on the last Saturday in April, commemorating a royal water privilege from 1506. The festival of San Pantaleón is celebrated on 27 July, and the Virgen del Pilar on 12 October.

Trails

Ruta 1 is a 14.60-kilometre circular route of low difficulty, suitable for mountain biking. It starts at the Bodega Cooperativa de San Pedro Apóstol, passes near the ruins of the former Hospital de Peregrinos and shares part of its route with the Camino de Santiago.

Ruta 2 is a 3.60-kilometre walking route along the banks of the Río Yalde near the centre of Huércanos. After a section through vineyards, it leads to the Área Recreativa de la Cerrada. Ruta 3 is 5.10 kilometres long; its first 2 kilometres coincide with the first section of Ruta 1. The Subida a Negriales from Huércanos is a hiking or mountain-biking route through the surrounding area of Huércanos.
