Bobadilla – Culture, Nature and Festivals on the Najerilla

Bobadilla combines architectural history, a river landscape and local festivals. The Iglesia de San Juan Bautista was begun at the end of the 14th century and completed in the first third of the 16th century. Its main altar is designed in the Mannerist style; the church also houses a Hispano-Flemish depiction of Saint John the Baptist from the 16th century.

A mural on the way to the washhouse commemorates the women of Bobadilla who used to visit the communal washhouse; it was created in 2022. Puente Mocho is a medieval bridge over the Najerilla River in Bobadilla. The ruins of Puente Mocho are associated with the Roman road from Aquitania to Astorga.

Nature on the Najerilla

The Najerilla River flows through the municipality of Bobadilla. European mink and otters are found along its banks. The riverside recreation area offers a natural setting on the banks of the Najerilla. The river, its wildlife and the recreation area form a separate focus alongside the historic buildings.

Wine and Festivals

Wine from the region and pinchos are offered at the entrances to the Calaos. At a celebration in the wine-cellar district, visitors can tour several underground tunnels or caves, known as Calaos, which are used for storing wine.

The Festival de la Trucha takes place on the Sunday before the feast day of Saint John the Baptist on 24 June and includes various activities. The main event is a tasting of fried trout served with a bread roll and a jug of Rioja wine.

The San Juan festivities take place from 23 to 25 June. They include tastings, traditional games, a procession and performances by the local dance group.

A celebration on the first weekend of September commemorates the end of the labor-intensive agricultural harvest work. One event starts at 6 a.m. in Bobadilla's village square.
