Viniegra de Abajo – Valley, Trails and Culture

The Valle del Río Urbión opens on the Mediterranean side of the Picos de Urbión and extends entirely through Viniegra de Abajo.

Landscape

Viniegra de Abajo is one of the seven villages integrated into the Parque Natural del Alto Najerilla. There, the Najerilla River and its tributaries form pools, rapids and waterfalls; mountain pastures, Iberian peaks and mixed forests are part of the landscape. In the wider regional surroundings of Viniegra de Abajo are Cerro San Lorenzo, the Sierra de Urbión mountain range, Campiña mountain and Monte Marañón peak. The Paramanos recreation area is located on the Urbión River along the road from Viniegra de Abajo to Viniegra de Arriba.

Hiking

The Valvanera–Viniegra de Abajo section of the GR 190 is 16.5 km long. Another hiking trail leads between Viniegra de Abajo and the Embalse de Mansilla via the old route between the two places and partly follows the Cañada Real de Santa Coloma livestock trail. A clearly specified stage length and a historic route provide different points of reference for personal planning. The combination of a fixed distance and a historic route places different emphases; both route profiles remain as independent descriptions alongside each other.
