Torremontalbo: Culture, Nature and Wine

In Torremontalbo, historic buildings, wine-growing landscapes and the Najerilla river area come together. The 18th-century Church of Santo Domingo de los Silos is attached to the Torre-Fuerte de Torremontalbo complex.

Culture

Its architectural history is reflected in a variety of forms. Torremontalbo is home to manor houses and palaces that reflect its aristocratic past. The Palacio de los Marqueses de la Ventosa is a 16th-century building with a stone façade and heraldic coats of arms. The Puente sobre el río Najerilla is a stone bridge offering views of the valley and is suitable for walking. From higher areas, Torremontalbo offers views of the valley, vineyards and surrounding mountains. The buildings do not stand in isolation: the religious complex, representative residential architecture and the stone crossing of the river mark different historical and spatial reference points. Together with the elevated viewpoints, they create a townscape in which buildings, the valley and the wine-growing landscape become visible one after another. Cultural impressions, river views and panoramic landscapes remain discernible as different facets of the area.

Nature

The Huertas del Najerilla (HT-6) cover 12.25 hectares and comprise an extensive area of floodplains and irrigated land with high productivity and landscape value. Between Torremontalbo and the mouth of the Najerilla lies a riverside woodland designated as Espacio de Vegetación Singular in the PEPMAN of La Rioja. Otters and European mink are found in the riverside woodland. The landscape can be understood through its area, irrigation and riverside vegetation.

Trails

Stage 14.1 of the Camino Natural del Ebro follows the LR-318 and then a local path to Torremontalbo. On this route, the rest area on the Najerilla River is reached after 4.2 km and 55 minutes. Along this section of the Camino Natural del Ebro, traditional gardens are irrigated by an extensive network of irrigation channels. A branch of the route passes through riverside woodland and along small river beaches to the mouth of the Najerilla. The stage number, route, distance and duration provide different ways to compare the itinerary with other day plans. The individual route characteristics can be considered separately.
