Zorraquín in the Ciloria Valley: Mountains, Church and Festivals

Zorraquín lies in the valley of the Ciloria River, a tributary of the Oja, and in the northern part of the Sierra de la Demanda. A rugged mountain landscape surrounds the village; rising above it is the 1,549-metre-high El Hombre mountain.

In the valley, native oaks, beech trees, hazelnut trees, crabapple trees and scrubland combine with plantings of poplars and pines. The mountain landscape, river valley and wooded areas can be viewed as distinct landscape accents. Natural stands of trees and shrubs meet deliberately established plantings, without confining the valley to just one type of landscape.

The Ruta Verde del Ciloria connects Ezcaray, Zorraquín and Valgañón as a linear route. The outward and return journeys follow the same path; the route includes rest areas with exercise equipment. The three villages and the shared route form its defining elements.

Zorraquín offers a wide range of opportunities for outdoor activities, including hiking trails, as well as numerous mountain biking routes for cycling in nature. The linear route, hiking and mountain biking place different emphasis on the experience; when planning the day, the choice may be between the type of activity and the form of the route. In this way, a fixed connection, hiking and cycling can be viewed as distinct forms of recreation in the natural environment.

Bus line VLR-109 connects Zorraquín with Logroño from Monday to Saturday.

Culture

The Church of San Esteban in Zorraquín is a Romanesque church; its apse was later replaced by a Gothic one in the 16th century. The apse, tracery panel and entrance door reveal different periods of construction and furnishing in the church.

Above the high altar, San Esteban preserves a 10th-century Mozarabic stone tracery panel. At its entrance door, the church preserves original Romanesque iron fittings from the 13th century.

For 2026, Zorraquín’s local festivals are scheduled as San Vitores on 26 August and Santa Lucía on 14 December.

The San Vitores festival traditionally includes the burning of the Ceferino, which announces the conclusion of the celebrations.

A stay can combine activity and local history: outdoors on paths and routes, and in the village through its buildings and festival calendar.

In the natural areas of La Rioja, pigeon hunting, stalking and monterías may be practised in accordance with the regional rules established each year.
