Alesanco: Culture, the Camino de Santiago and Wine

Alesanco shares with Hervías the historically disputed claim of being the birthplace of Zenón de Somodevilla y Bengoechea, the Marqués de la Ensenada (1702–1781).

Culture

The bust of the Marqués de la Ensenada in Alesanco was commissioned by the Diputación Riojana for the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition in Seville.

The parish church of Nuestra Señora Santa María de la Asunción dates from the first half of the 16th century and is characterised by the Gothic tradition.

Its main altar is Baroque and bears an inscription dating it to 1769.

Routes and Sacred Sites

The Camino de Santiago Francés is designated as a green route and passes through Alesanco.

The Las Ventas recreational area is located on the Camino de Santiago and serves as a resting place for pilgrims.

The Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Prado is located 1 km east of Alesanco.

The hermitage contains a small Neoclassical altarpiece with panel paintings and, at the head end, an image of the Virgen del Rosario from the late 16th century.

Landscape

The Las Ventas recreational area includes a restored traditional Chozo-Guardaviñas, a historic vineyard hut.

Foxes, Montagu’s harriers, calandra larks and Iberian wall lizards are listed among the animal species found in Las Ventas.

The Río Tuerto flows through the centre of Alesanco.

Wine and Festivals

Alesanco’s agricultural identity is based primarily on grape growing and wine production; claretes are particularly appreciated in the area, along with red and white wines.

During the procession in honour of the Virgen del Prado, the statue of the Virgin is carried every year on 13 September from the Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Prado to the church.

A culinary competition normally takes place during the festivities in honour of Saint James the Apostle and is open to anyone who registers to participate; a tortilla is prepared as part of the competition.

The mountain biking route Ruta en BTT: Los Monasterios is 36 km long and has a cumulative elevation gain of 530 metres.

It runs along trails and paved roads and is rated as moderately difficult.

After passing through Torrecilla sobre Alesanco, the route reaches Alesanco on paved roads.
