Discover Casalarreina: Trails, Architectural Heritage and Wine

Casalarreina can be explored through trails along the Oja, Romanesque architecture and the Rioja Alta Wine Route. A notable historical landmark is the Chapel of San Román de Ajuarte: it is the last surviving evidence of the former settlement of Ajuarte and a Romanesque building from the 12th century.

Culture

The Nuestra Señora de la Piedad Monastery was built between 1514 and 1524. On March 14, 1522, it was blessed by Pope Adrian VI. In 1977, the monastery was protected as a cultural asset of particular interest in the category of a national historical-artistic monument.

The Church of San Martín is designed in the Rococo style; Fernando González de Lara designed it, and Tomás Díez de Mata built it in 1789. The different architectural styles and dates provide several historical points of reference for a cultural visit.

Trails and Landscape

The Vía Verde del Oja is not circular and is suitable for bicycles. It follows a former railway line for 26 kilometres. The Ruta Verde del Oja-Tirón runs from Casalarreina via Cihuri and Anguciana to Haro and is 12 kilometres long. Based on their routes and lengths, the two trails can be considered separately when planning your day.

The Santo Domingo–Casalarreina route connects Santo Domingo de la Calzada with Casalarreina via a path along the banks of the Oja. The section of the Vía Verde between Santo Domingo de la Calzada and Casalarreina passes through an extensive floodplain with intensively cultivated fields; along the Oja, there are also remnants of natural willow thickets.

Wine and Festivals

Casalarreina is part of the Rioja Alta Wine Route and is located in one of the municipalities covered by the Rioja protected designation of origin.

The Fiesta de San Juan includes a pilgrimage, a wine fight and a meal in the countryside near the Pobes spring. Festivals in Casalarreina feature tastings of characteristic local products such as chorizo, sardines and veal, as well as a craft market.
