Culture and History

The Church of San Martín was built from 1545 onwards, initially as the Church of Santa María la Nueva; its dedication was later changed to San Martín. The rectangular building, constructed from ashlar stone, has a single nave with four bays, chapels between the buttresses and an apse with an octagonal end.

The main altarpiece of the Church of San Martín was created between 1702 and 1709 by José de San Juan y Martín, Juan de Peralta and Juan Zapater Martínez.

The Santa Clara Convent was founded in 1505 and contains Baroque altarpieces and 16th-century frescoes. The Ermita de Santa Ana, built in the 18th century, stands beside an archaeological site with Celtiberian and Roman connections. This site preserves remains dating from the Iron Age to the 5th century AD.

The round, municipally owned Chozo de Cuatro Cantos stands on the Camino de Entrena a Logroño. It is a Guardaviñas shepherd's hut or vineyard shelter that can be reached from the town centre via this route. The chozo is considered an example of vernacular architecture and is attributed ethnographic and landscape value.

Craftsmanship and Landscape

The Espacio Textil Creativo Artelar in Entrena is a textile craft workshop that produces fabrics on handlooms. Artelar preserves the traditions of wool combing, wool spinning and dyeing with natural dyes. The workshop also offers training in high-warp and low-warp weaving, knot textiles, felting and frame-woven tapestries.

The Río Antiguo flows through Entrena and irrigates its vegetable gardens. The landscape of the municipality of Entrena is considered a plain between 500 and 600 metres above sea level, transformed by small ravines into hills, residual summits and open plains.

Anyone wishing to combine different interests in Entrena can include historic sites, textile craftsmanship and the landscape in their plans. The Monday market, festivals and the bodega's activities provide further possible focuses for planning the day. Travel dates and personal pace determine which of these themes come together; no fixed order is required. Cultural, craft and landscape aspects can be weighted differently. This allows the daily schedule to follow personal interests throughout the stay without requiring a specific programme.
