Las Ruedas de Ocón: Wineries, Sierra and Historic Townscape

Las Ruedas de Ocón begins with an unusual cultural heritage site: the Barrio Bodegas, with its wine cellars dug into the earth, is open to visitors as freely accessible cultural heritage. The village is also considered one of the natural gateways to the Sierra La Hez. Las Ruedas de Ocón lies almost entirely within a forest and is surrounded by oaks, holm oaks and beeches.

Culture and Townscape

The parish church of Santa Bárbara is a Baroque building from the 17th and 18th centuries. It is built of masonry and brick and has a three-part nave and an oval apse. The main altar of the Church of Santa Bárbara is a Neoclassical work from the early 17th century.

The architectural heritage also includes the traditional Las Ruedas washhouse. Its walls are made of masonry with rounded stones from the surrounding area, while a pitched roof supported by wooden beams completes the building. The former washhouse of Las Ruedas is integrated into the town centre. Roman remains of an aqueduct have been preserved in the Barranco de San Julián near Las Ruedas de Ocón.

Las Ruedas de Ocón preserves the traditional appearance of its oldest houses. The patron saint festivities take place on the last weekend of July.

Nature and Trails

A path leads from Las Ruedas to the Barranco del Sol in the direction of the Sierra. It runs alongside the stream that crosses the village. A circular mountain hike passes through the forests, gorges and natural viewpoints of the Sierra de Ocón, as well as landscapes such as Cogote el Alto and the area around Las Ruedas.

The trails can be viewed from two different perspectives: the route along the stream describes a connection from the village towards the Sierra, while the circular hike brings together several landscape features and named areas. Those wishing to organise the nature-related topics can therefore distinguish between a streamside route and a broader mountain and landscape circuit. The two descriptions thus place different emphases on the trails around Las Ruedas de Ocón.

Las Ruedas de Ocón has a designated motorhome parking area with nine spaces.

Local production also adds its own distinctive touch. Embutidos Luis Gil produces ham, loin, salchichón, chorizo, chorizos culares, cured pork belly, paleta, pâtés, butifarra and sobrasada. The company uses its own organically farmed livestock, with its own free-range pigs, as well as fresh organic meat. At Embutidos Luís Gil, the production process for organic meat and organic sausages is explained.
