Zaldierna – Church, River and Circular Trail

At the entrance to Zaldierna, architectural history and the river landscape meet in an ensemble dating from the 18th century. Masonry, ashlar masonry and arcades shape its appearance; in some places, reinforcing walls run above the river. The ensemble is listed in the Artistic and Historical Heritage of La Rioja. This introduction alone gives the village a clearly recognisable architectural character.

A stone bridge over the Zambullón River leads to the Church of San Sebastián. Its single-nave bell gable has two round-arched openings, while the high altar is a Baroque work from the 18th century. The exterior form of the ensemble, the bridge and the sacred furnishings each provide distinct points of interest: visitors to Zaldierna can explore the village both through its architectural forms and through the details of the church.

Landscape

Zaldierna lies in the Oja Valley at the Barranco de Cilbarna and is crossed by the Zambullón River. The Church of San Sebastián stands on a slope; the Arroyo Zambullón runs at the foot of its retaining wall. The valley, barranco, river and slope therefore describe different spatial levels of the same place. The change in perspectives is particularly clear where the church architecture meets the waterways and the hillside location.

For exploring the area, two specific focal points can be combined in Zaldierna: the church, with its bell gable and Baroque high altar, directs attention to individual architectural elements; the circular trail broadens the perspective across several hamlets along the Oja. This places a cultural and historical visit to the village alongside a route connecting several local settings.

Festivals and History

On 20 January, Zaldierna celebrates the feast day of Saint Sebastian, the village’s patron saint. On the last weekend of August, the Día de Gracias follows with a mass and a communal meal. The two dates represent different occasions in the calendar: the January feast has a fixed date, while the August festival is tied to a weekend. Historical tradition also records the valley’s former nickname, “Capital de las Aldeas”.

Routes and Surroundings

From Ezcaray, Zaldierna can be reached via the road through the hamlets; after the Cilbarrena junction, the village is close to the road. The Robledal de La Ganchera circular trail is 6.0 kilometres long and connects the three hamlets of Zaldierna, Azarrulla and San Antón, which are situated along the Oja River. Thus, two different ways of exploring the area are available in the village: a focused look at the ensemble and church, and a route whose course connects several hamlets along the Oja.
