Zamora: Romanesque Heritage, Aceñas and Trails

Zamora lies on the banks of the Duero and along the Vía de la Plata route. The old town preserves significant Romanesque heritage and is designated as a historic-artistic ensemble.

Culture and History

The Murallas de Zamora comprise three walled districts. They correspond to different historical construction phases from the 9th to the 14th century and make the long development of the city’s fortifications visible.

El Castillo de Zamora experienced a period of great prosperity in the Middle Ages. Today, the site offers a viewpoint overlooking the Catedral de Zamora, the Duero and the Campo de la Verdad.

The Catedral de Zamora has a Byzantine dome from the 12th century covered with stone scales, as well as a Romanesque tower from the 13th century.

Zamora is home to one of the oldest groups of aceñas, or historic river mills, in Spain. The Aceñas de Olivares have been documented since the 10th century; their interior houses the Centro de Interpretación de las Industrias Tradicionales del Agua.

The Museo de Semana Santa in Zamora houses most of the processional figures depicting the Passion of Christ. Another cultural focus is the Museo Etnográfico de Castilla y León: it opened at the end of 2002 and was established as a dynamic centre for the region’s diverse heritage associated with traditions, customs and practices.

The ethnographic museum also houses a collection of tangible and intangible cultural heritage loaned by Caja España, comprising around 10,000 objects as well as graphic and audiovisual documentation. The items on display include agricultural tools, pottery, folk ceramics, traditional costumes and amulets.

Trails and Cityscapes

Zamora is part of the Ruta Europea del Modernismo. The city’s buildings represent the three main currents of this movement. The Ruta de Coomonte leads to works by the sculptor Coomonte in Zamora.

The Ruta Geomonumental traces the history of stone from its formation millions of years ago to its use as a decorative and building material throughout the history of the capital, Zamora.
