Discover Lubián: Sanabrés Way, Culture and Landscape

Lubián is the fifth stage of the Sanabrés Way and is located on a mid-slope below the valley formed by the Pedro and Tuela rivers.

From Lubián, the Sanabrés Way continues via the Portilla de La Canda into the province of Ourense and Galicia, leaving the province of Zamora. For your planning, the stage number and the continuation across the provincial border mark two different points of reference along the route.

Landscape

The landscapes around Lubián include meadows, forests, glacial valleys such as Fraga da Osa, riverside areas and gorges carved by the Tuela and Pedro rivers; oak, birch and chestnut trees grow there, among others.

For orientation purposes, these landscape types can be considered according to river areas, forests, valleys and historic sites. Castro de As Muradellas is located about 3 kilometres from Lubián on the Tuela River.

A marked path leads to As Muradellas above the Tuela River and enables visitors to explore it; the route has trail markers and information panels. As Muradellas consists of two walled enclosures, preceded by ditches and rows of upright stones serving as defensive systems.

Culture

The Santuario de La Tuiza in Lubián is protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest in the Monument category.

O Cortello do Lobo is a traditional structure of vernacular architecture that was used to catch wolves. It was used to protect against wolf attacks, not to eradicate wolves.

Traditions

The Romería de La Tuiza takes place every year on the last Sunday in September. It includes a procession in the vicinity of the sanctuary.

The traditional livestock fair associated with the Romería was transformed over the years into a fair for handicrafts and regional products.

Cycling Routes

Día de la Bicicleta was established in 1988 by the Amigos de la Bici collective and has taken place continuously ever since.

Día de la Bicicleta features a 2-kilometre children's route, a 10-kilometre family route and a 20-kilometre adult route. The three route lengths can be compared directly if you want to plan different distances for a cycling day.

Getting there

The main road connection to Lubián is the A-52; it connects the A6 (Madrid–A Coruña) with Vigo and the Rías Baixas, passing through Ourense and places such as Xinzo de Limia and Verín.
