Culture

The Iglesia de San Pedro is a 12th-century church in Pajares de la Lampreana. The town’s sacred art also includes the Virgen del Templo, a Romanesque carved figure created between 1200 and 1220 and measuring 85 centimetres in height. The main altar of the Ermita de Santa María del Templo is a Renaissance work with nineteen panels painted in the Italian style in the 16th century; half of them were created by the Zamoran painter Blas de Oña.

The Ermita is the usual home of the image of the Virgen del Templo. A procession carried the image through Pajares from the parish church of San Pedro to its customary place in the Ermita. These two places of worship and the image therefore form a clear cultural point of reference for anyone wishing to include religious architecture and regional traditions of religious imagery in their stay.

Traditions and Pilgrimage

The festival calendar combines fixed dates with recurring cultural events. In Pajares de la Lampreana, processions of supplication to the Virgen del Templo take place on 14 April and 2 July. Traditional patronal festivities in honour of the Virgen del Templo also take place in Pajares de la Lampreana. The festival of the Virgen del Templo on 8 September is known locally as La Feria.

The Semana cultural of Pajares de la Lampreana takes place in the last week of August. It includes theatre performances, dances, exhibitions of traditional handicrafts and children’s drawings. A traditional pilgrimage leads from Villarrín de Campos to the Ermita de Pajares de la Lampreana; participants wear white tunics and walk barefoot. The different dates and forms can be considered separately for personal planning, depending on whether a festive, cultural or spiritual focus is most important.

Nature

The townscape also includes a landscape aspect: The Laguna de las Higuillas is listed in the wetland inventory of the Duero Basin for Pajares de la Lampreana, covering an area of 2.2 hectares.
