Vecilla de la Polvorosa – Water, Circular Route and Local Culture

The circular route “Riberas del Eria y Órbigo” passes through Morales del Rey, Vecilla de la Polvorosa and Fresno de la Polvorosa; it begins and ends at Plaza de la Iglesia in Morales del Rey. As its route theme, it connects several places with a clearly designated starting and ending point. The route, water and townscape each provide different focal points. Along the route, a circular trail, riverside landscape, bridge construction and local culture are therefore found side by side. For planning purposes, these focal points can be considered separately.

Nature

The river beach of Vecilla de la Polvorosa is suitable for relaxing and swimming. The floodplain of Vecilla de la Polvorosa is irrigated by the Órbigo. The Canal de Vecilla extends for more than 25 kilometres from Vecilla de la Polvorosa to the Tera. The Puente Colgante suspension bridge in the municipality of Vecilla de la Polvorosa is a concrete bridge over the Eria. At the water, a riverside area for relaxing and swimming, a floodplain irrigated by the river, a long canal route and a bridge over the Eria thus come together. The beach, floodplain, canal and bridge each give the landscape its own distinctive visible feature.

Culture

The Parsec mural in Vecilla de la Polvorosa depicts Rosendo, the last ferryman to connect the two banks of the Órbigo. The Church of San Andrés in Vecilla de la Polvorosa can be reached via a staircase leading to the atrium of the temple. Its main nave was reconstructed. Several representative dovecotes in the area are located near Vecilla de la Polvorosa; they are made of adobe bricks and rammed earth, with two-tiered roofs. The image motif, religious building and rural architectural form thus represent three different cultural aspects of the town: the memory of a person, ecclesiastical architecture and traditional construction methods.
