Fermoselle: Old Town, Castle and Duero Views

The historic old town of Fermoselle features a medieval layout with narrow, steep streets. In 1974, Fermoselle was placed under protection as a historic-artistic ensemble.

Culture

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Fermoselle dates back to the 13th century and is Romanesque in style. In the upper part of Fermoselle stands the Iglesia de Santa Colomba, a Romanesque building from the 12th century with a cruciform layout and round arches. Inside the Iglesia de Santa Colomba is the Romanesque wooden carving Cristo del Humilladero from the 11th century.

The remains of the Castillo de Doña Urraca are protected as an asset of special cultural interest. The ruins of the Castillo de Doña Urraca form a viewpoint over the Duero and the Portuguese bank. The Mirador del Torrejón, also known as El Torojón, offers panoramic views over the centre of Fermoselle and the surrounding natural landscape.

The Casa del Parque “Convento de San Francisco” is located in the former Convento de San Francisco in Fermoselle. The garden of the Convento de San Francisco features ethnographic displays, fountains and vegetable gardens. The Casa del Parque includes a 15-minute audiovisual presentation about the region’s nature and ways of life, shown regularly.

Nature and Trails

The Arribes del Duero Nature Park around Fermoselle is home to a rich variety of flora and fauna and offers opportunities for hiking, cycling and water activities. Boat trips are offered on the Duero between the walls of its canyons, during which guides provide information about the environment, wildlife and customs of the Arribes.

Stage 31 of the GR-14 leads within the municipality of Fermoselle to the Fuente de La Noria. Stage 32 of the GR-14 follows the Senda del Duero from Fermoselle into the province of Salamanca through the canyon of the Tormes River. Food and Wine

Fermoselle’s wine is associated with its own grape variety and the Arribes designation of origin. Bacalao is a traditional gastronomic product in Fermoselle. Bacalao a la tranca is prepared in the Spanish style with oil and garlic. Hornazo de Fermoselle is a bread-like pastry made from unleavened dough with lard and oil, filled with chorizo.
