Discover Peleagonzalo: Trails, Wine and History

Peleagonzalo lies at the foot of a hill crowned by Monte San Miguel, approximately 1 kilometer from the left bank of the Duero. On the mountain slopes and in the Vega extending to the Duero, irrigated farmland, dryland and scrubland come together. As a result, different types of landscape meet in the surrounding area, visible across the slopes, fields and river environment.

Nature and Trails

At the eastern edge of the town, after passing through Peleagonzalo, the path climbs through a small valley with holm oaks and rockroses; the Peleagonzalo wine cellars lie on the right. In numerous wine cellars, local residents store the wines produced in Peleagonzalo. Stage 18 of the Camino Natural Duero–Toro–Zamora turns onto the Camino de San Miguel and heads towards Peleagonzalo. The ascending valley path and the designated stage represent two different route references that can be considered separately when planning your own journey.

Festivals and Church

There are two fixed religious dates during the year: on May 9, Peleagonzalo holds the pilgrimage to San Gregorio Nacianceno at the Fuente del Soto. On September 29, the town celebrates the patron saint's festival in honor of San Miguel Arcángel. For scheduling purposes, the two occasions can be considered separately.

The present-day Iglesia de San Miguel Arcángel was designed in 1901–1902 and replaced the former Renaissance church. The new parish church of San Miguel Arcángel was inaugurated on February 25, 1906. These dates place the present church building within Peleagonzalo's more recent architectural history.

History

After the town was almost completely destroyed on December 28, 1860, the new Peleagonzalo was built on the flank of Monte San Benito and officially inaugurated on September 29, 1862. On March 1, 1476, the Battle of Peleagonzalo was fought in the Castroquemado gorge.

During the Castilian War of Succession, the Battle of Toro also took place in this area between the troops of Isabel la Católica and Juana la Beltraneja; it was decisive for the later victory of the Isabelline faction.

The Duero Route

On the Duero Route, the Toro–Villaralbo stage is designated as a river route; it is 35 kilometers long. The starting point for the river route can be reached from the N-122 via the road towards Peleagonzalo and then along an unpaved road to a picnic area and the facilities of Club Piragua 5 Pilares.
