San Justo combines a Marian festival with sacred architecture and a landscape shaped by oak and chestnut trees. The village has a preserved, rich natural environment a short distance from the Parque Natural del Lago de Sanabria. On 8 September, the Marian images from Barrio de Rábano, Rábano de Sanabria and San Justo are carried to the Santuario de la Alcobilla. The festival at Alcobilla includes a picnic centred on octopus prepared in the Sanabria style. In San Justo, a fixed date, religious tradition and a regionally characteristic dish come together.

Culture

Archaeological finds at La Alcobilla seem to indicate that it is a cult centre even older than Christianity. The Santuario de la Alcobilla has a basilica plan with three naves; the central nave is higher. The sanctuary was built in the second third of the 16th century, possibly over an earlier chapel. The Cuesta Mágica de Coso is located on the road connecting Coso with the Santuario de la Alcobilla. The sanctuary’s surroundings include a long religious prehistory, a clearly recognisable building structure and a named stretch of road.

The church of San Justo de Sanabria also has its own architectural character: it has a tower and a Baroque bell gable and contains three altarpieces. San Justo strives to preserve the region’s distinctive architecture, with stone, wood and slate as its defining materials. The village church and the sanctuary differ in their specific design; both represent the sacred and architectural aspects of the village.

Nature

The Rozas Villarino Trefacio y regreso route passes through chestnut forests that gradually give way to oak forests. The Vados de San Ciprián route includes two small waterfalls, barely three metres high, which flow over granite rocks and merge into the Trefacio River. In Rozas, there is a viewpoint at the foot of Cerro de San Juan. The landscape includes several clearly defined features: the change in forest types, water flowing over granite and a viewpoint at the foot of a hill.

Trails

The Colmenar de Cerdillo y Molino Botero route is signposted beyond its turnaround point as far as the neighbouring village of San Justo. The various trail features – changing forests, running water, viewpoints and the connection between neighbouring villages – allow planning according to the desired focus. When comparing the trails, forest landscapes, waterfalls, viewpoints and the signposted connection to San Justo emerge as distinct features.

The trails can therefore be distinguished by their specific landscapes: Rozas Villarino Trefacio y regreso represents the gradual change in forest types, while Vados de San Ciprián represents waterfalls over granite and the transition to the Trefacio River. Colmenar de Cerdillo y Molino Botero additionally leads beyond its turnaround point towards San Justo.
