Montamarta: Holiday Apartment, Zangarrón and Historic Buildings

In Montamarta, the Zangarrón is at the heart of a unique tradition in the province of Zamora. It consists of just one figure and is celebrated on two days, 1 and 6 January. Traditions and Routes

At the edge of Montamarta, pilgrims cross a small medieval bridge and reach the monumental Ermita de la Virgen del Castillo on a raised hill. On the stage from Zamora to Granja de Moreruela, the route leads to Montamarta along agricultural tracks after passing through Roales del Pan.

Religious Buildings and History

The Iglesia de Santa María del Castillo is a Renaissance building from the 16th century, constructed on limestone rocks. The church rises above the valley of the Río Esla; its base is accessible in summer, while during wet periods it is covered by the river's waters.

The Monasterio de Nuestra Señora de Montamarta was founded in 1407 by 13 monks of the Hieronymite Order. They came from the Monasterio de Guadalupe. The Iglesia de San Miguel Arcángel was built in 1910 by Francisco Nieto, using surviving structural elements from an earlier temple dating from 1720. On the main altar of the Iglesia de San Miguel, San Miguel Arcángel is located in the central niche; the side niches depict saints of the Hieronymite monastery. The former Convento de San Jerónimo survives as a ruin.
