Pereruela – Duero Canyon, Pottery and Trails through Sayago

Stage 19 of the Camino Natural del Duero leads to Pereruela. Before reaching Pereruela, it crosses a plain of cereal cultivation; at the boundaries of the municipality, the Arribe area begins at the Duero as a deep canyon carved out by the river.

At the entrance to the municipality of Pereruela, the water disappears beneath the rocks in the Los Hociles collapse area for a length of two hundred metres.

Culture and Crafts

The Iglesia de Santa Eufemia combines Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance elements. Traditional pottery from Pereruela produces cooking casseroles, crucibles and ovens made of refractory clay. For this purpose, it uses red clay mixed with kaolin from the Las Barreras deposit. The Puente de Sogo is probably of Roman origin and lies beneath the road that once connected Pereruela with Fermoselle.

Los Castillos was a late Roman settlement in the Arribe de Pereruela. The Museo de Alfarería has a permanent exhibition and is housed in the former Guardia Civil barracks. The Centro de Interpretación del Barro houses a permanent exhibition with old and contemporary pieces from Pereruela, as well as pieces from other Spanish pottery centres.

Pereruela's traditional architecture includes houses with main entrances, balconies and rear gates for carts and animals. The Calzada Mirandesa in Pereruela is divided into two sections. The Puente Potato is known as the “bridge from Roman times”.

Trails

The GR 14 Pereruela–Moral de Sayago hiking trail is 23.7 kilometres long one way and follows the route of a former Roman road through the Senda del Duero. The GR 14 Zamora–Pereruela hiking trail is 18.2 kilometres long one way and passes through a landscape of the Sayago plateau with extensive cereal fields and grazing pastures. The Ruta cicloturista de Los Hociles de Pereruela is a circular cycling route that begins at the church of Pereruela and passes through a landscape with dehesas and unique geological formations. It is approximately 12 kilometres long and takes one to two hours by bicycle at a leisurely pace; classified as easy, it is recommended for a broad audience.

Cuisine and Traditions

The cuisine of Pereruela and the comarca de Sayago includes traditional recipes that are prepared particularly in earthenware pots. La Vaca Antrueja is a tradition revived in 1986 and celebrated on Carnival Sunday. Alfareruela takes place on the last Saturday in August.
