Linarejos between the Sierra de la Culebra and rock art

Linarejos lies in the heart of the Sierra de la Culebra. The Sierra de la Culebra has been designated a regional hunting reserve since 1973. In Linarejos, the Covacha de Portillón was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in the rock art category on 25 June 1985. The landscape and the preserved rock art sites shape the distinctive themes of this small village.

Nature

The Peña Mira summit is located in the vicinity of Linarejos. Mount Penha da Cruz and Mount Alto do Gato are located near Linarejos, while Mount Alto do Costa lies in the wider regional area. Las Portillas is a natural viewpoint over the Sierra de la Culebra at the transition between Linarejos and Aliste. Rock Art and History

The Covacha del Portillón is a small quartzite cave near Peña Mira, the highest summit in the Sierra de la Culebra. It contains schematic rock motifs. These include anthropomorphic, anchor-shaped and cross-shaped depictions, as well as bar and rod forms in reddish and orange tones. Canchal de Melendro is a Bronze Age site with rock art in Linarejos. The Covacha del Portillón can be seen from the Melendro rock shelter.
