Samir de los Caños leads directly into the early history of the surrounding area with La Corona. The pre-Roman archaeological site covers five hectares and is located in Samir de los Caños. Structures from the First Iron Age were documented at La Corona. This gives the site both a clearly defined extent and a specific chronological connection to the First Iron Age.
Culture and History
Several religious buildings are spread across different locations. The Iglesia de San Juan Bautista stands on a hill outside the village. The Ermita de San Pedro Mártir chapel is located in the centre of Samir de los Caños. The Ermita del Santo Cristo de la Ribera chapel lies within the built-up area. It was renovated in 1832 by the master builder Ángel Iglesias and has a gabled façade made of ashlar masonry, as well as a small bell gable. Thus, the religious buildings represent the hilltop, village centre and built-up area as different spatial references. At the same time, the construction date, master builder, façade material and bell gable add specific architectural details to the local history.
Festivals and Events
28 and 29 August are local holidays in Samir de los Caños in honour of San Juan Degollado. The Cross Popular de Samir de los Caños added a sporting highlight, with a main course of 7.5 kilometres in a cross-country format. The race starts and finishes at the Polideportivo on Calle de La Era. The holidays and the cross-country race thus represent two different forms of public local culture that can be considered separately when planning the timing. The calendar therefore combines a set date with an event including its course length, cross-country format, and starting and finishing location.
Landscape and Regional Surroundings
The wider region around Samir de los Caños is home to the Mirador São João das Arribas viewpoint, the Museum of Terra de Miranda, the ruins of Fuerte Nuevo de Torregamones, the Ruinas del Castillo y Alcazaba ruins, and the historic site of Muralha Pré-Românica de Miranda do Douro. The mountain of Campanario, the Sierra de Casica mountain and the Urreta peak are also located in the wider regional surroundings. The various designations therefore range from a viewpoint and museum to ruins, a historic site, mountains and a peak. This mixture is precisely what matters when classifying the surroundings: it encompasses cultural destinations and landscape features without grouping them into a single category.

Tradition and Village Culture
The text of “La Cordera de Samir de los Caños” was written by the local shepherd Baltasar Belver Río. The performance “La Cordera de Samir de los Caños” is associated with the village church. Its cast consists of an angel and four anonymous shepherds. Traditional gifts such as milk, honey and a lamb are part of “La Cordera de Samir de los Caños”. The text, performance venue, roles and gifts thus form four clearly distinguishable components of the same traditional performance. The local author and the anonymous shepherds bring together named participants and others who remain unidentified.
