Fuentespreadas – History, Festivals and Wine

Fuentespreadas can be discovered through tangible traces of its history, its agriculturally shaped landscape and a calendar of firmly established festivals. The “Ajuar de Fuentespreadas” comprises remains of the deceased person’s clothing and weapons, the harness of their horse, agricultural and livestock-farming tools, liturgical objects, as well as vessels for domestic use.

Landscape and Wine

Fuentespreadas has a traditional agricultural landscape with irrigated maize, sugar beet and alfalfa, dry-farmed areas with cereals, legumes and sunflowers, as well as some vineyards. The municipality has little woodland cover; characteristic features include stands of pine and maritime pine, rows and groves of poplars, as well as individual wooded areas near the town. The Tierra del Vino de Zamora comarca represents a wine-growing landscape with vineyards, wineries and its own wine culture.

Culture and History

Heraldic coats of arms can be seen on the façades of some houses in Fuentespreadas. The parish church of “Iglesia de San Cristóbal” was built in the mid-12th century, rebuilt in the 14th century and remodelled again in the 18th century. Fuentespreadas was founded around the year 1000. Notable furnishings in the “Iglesia de San Cristóbal” include a crucifix, the “Cristo Crucificado”.

Festivals Throughout the Year

The Roman Market “FONTIBVS PREDATIS” has been held on the third weekend of August since 2004. On the first Sunday in October, Fuentespreadas celebrates the patronal festivals in honour of “Nuestra Señora del Rosario”. The Quintos of Fuentespreadas celebrate their festival on 26 December.
