Culture

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Barruelo is the only surviving one of four historic churches in Palazuelo de Vedija. Construction began in the 16th century, and it was rebuilt in the 18th century. Inside is a Baroque high altar from the 18th century with an image of the Assumption of Mary created by Mateo Enríquez. The furnishings are complemented by an altar dedicated to Saint Joseph.

A special gateway to the local festival culture leads to the Centro de Interpretación de la Vaca Enmaromada. The small museum is dedicated to the local festival and its documented history, which dates back more than 200 years. On display are old photographs, explanatory panels, objects associated with the Maroma and audiovisual materials.

Festivals and Customs

The Vaca Enmaromada takes place every year from 21 to 24 September as part of the patron-saint festivities in honour of the municipality's patron saint, San Mauricio. During this event, participants lead a cow through the streets of Palazuelo de Vedija, with a Maroma attached to its horns. On 30 June 2000, the Junta de Castilla y León declared the Vaca Enmaromada a traditional bull festival.

The Fiesta de la Matanza takes place on the first or second weekend of February. Its programme includes the traditional slaughter of a pig, singeing the skin and butchering it in front of an audience, while explaining the traditional process. Today, this takes place under controlled hygiene regulations.

The celebration in honour of the Virgen de la Asunción begins with a mass and is followed by a traditional procession through the streets of the municipality. The celebration also includes a communal barbecue prepared in the town hall courtyard.

Landscape

Palazuelo de Vedija is located in a landscape typical of Tierra de Campos, with open agricultural areas, furrows and wheat fields. The Arroyo de Marrandiel is the only discernible watercourse in the locality and flows further south into the Río Sequillo.
