Pesquera de Duero: The Cotarro de las bodegas, also known as Cuesta de San Pedro, is an underground wine-cellar quarter dug into a clay hill carved steeply by the Duero.

Culture and History

Within Pesquera’s compact urban structure, El Arco was the main entrance. El Arco was completed in 1630. The coat of arms of the Zúñiga family, the Dukes of Béjar and lords of the town, is located at El Arco.

The historic street plan is irregular. The Plaza Mayor lies at the centre, while the Plazuelas del Postigo and del Cura are located to the west and east, respectively. A pottery quarter developed in Carralaceña, linked to the Vacceo-Roman city of Pintia.

The Baroque high altar of the Church of San Juan Bautista has a main section with four Solomonic columns decorated with leaves and grapes. The new Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Rubialejos was built between 1693 and 1726. It has a Latin-cross floor plan, a single-nave layout with a barrel vault, and a dome with a lantern decorated with stucco work and paintings.

The festival in honour of the Apostle at the Ermita de San Pedro includes a Mass around 29 June and a procession carrying the saint’s image through the local wine-cellar quarter. The San Juan festival is celebrated at the end of June and includes a religious service followed by a traditional procession with folk dances.

Wine

Pesquera de Duero preserves buildings associated with wine-making methods passed down since antiquity. These include lagares, where grapes were trodden and pressed underfoot to obtain must. The lagares were separate rectangular buildings with a basin for the grapes and a smaller basin for collecting the must.

Bodega Ascensión Repiso Bocos produces and matures organic wines in the Semicrianza, Crianza and Autor categories. The first winery of Bodega Tinto Pesquera was a 16th-century lagar.

Nature and Paths

Pesquera de Duero was established at an unspecified time in the Middle Ages on the riverbank in an area that had already been inhabited in prehistoric times. Parque de El Batán is a small recreational area created in the early 1980s next to the road to Peñafiel, on a section of the former bed of the Piñel stream.

The section of the GR-14 assigned to Pesquera de Duero is Stage 12, between Peñafiel and Quintanilla de Onésimo. A 106-metre-long wooden footbridge in the Área Recreativa El Verde connects Pesquera de Duero with the GR-14. The crossing and the signposted stage can be considered side by side as two different scales for your own planning.
