Fuentetoba: La Toba, Rock Art and Trails at Pico Frentes

Fuentetoba lies at the foot of Pico Frentes. The Río Golmayo rises at Pico Frentes and flows through Fuentetoba. La Toba is a waterfall more than 20 m high, nestled among rock formations. Near La Toba there are small lakes or ponds considered exceptionally clear.

Nature and Landscape

The Sima del Pico Frentes comprises a steeply descending gallery, at the lower end of which fallen blocks and other material accumulate. The trail at Pico Frentes can lead to the highest point of the rock massif at 1,375 m, which is considered particularly scenic.

A hiking trail leads from Fuentetoba to Monjía and continues climbing from there towards Pico Frentes. The rock faces of Fuentetoba serve as a climbing area. Different trail types, elevations and activities can be considered separately when planning an individual trip.

Culture and History

The Ermita de La Monjía in Fuentetoba is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category. It preserves a Romanesque chapel in which the image of Our Lady of Valvanera is venerated and kept. The chapel of La Monjía dates from the 11th century and has a portal with three concentric semicircular arches.

The Church of San Martín de Tours in Fuentetoba was built in the 16th century. It preserves a baptismal font with a circular base and a decorated truncated-conical bowl. The La Monjía monastery in Fuentetoba was also built in the 16th century.

The origins of Fuentetoba are associated with the Christian repopulation of the area during the expansion into Castilian territory in the 12th century. In the vicinity of Fuentetoba lies the Peña de los Plantíos archaeological site, with various depictions of prehistoric rock art from the Bronze Age; it is located on the southern side of a sandstone outcrop among holm oaks, halfway between Fuentetoba and Golmayo, and the rock paintings are dated to the Chalcolithic or the Early Bronze Age.

Traditions

On 8 September, Fuentetoba celebrates the popular festival in honor of the Virgin of Valvanera. On 11 November, a pilgrimage takes place in honor of Saint Martin. During the pilgrimage in honor of the Virgen de Valvanera, participants climb from the Church of San Martín de Tours via the stone Stations of the Cross to Calvario and then continue on to Monjía.

From Soria, the indicated road connection follows the N-234 and the SO-P-5029 access road to Fuentetoba.
