Barriomartín – Nature, Trails and History

Barriomartín is located in the Urbión Regional Reserve, a landscape inhabited by many red deer, roe deer and wild boar. Along the “Los Pueblos del Puerto de Piqueras” hiking trail (SLC-SO 93), holm oaks, sessile oaks, Pyrenean oaks, maples and Scots pines grow. The different tree species accompany the trail in a distinctive way, making the vegetation a tangible part of the landscape. For nature enthusiasts, the trail combines observing the plant life with following a specific route.

Trails through several places

The “Los Pueblos del Puerto de Piqueras” hiking trail (SLC-SO 93) passes through Barriomartín as well as La Póveda and Arguijo. Another historic connection is the Cañada Real Soriana Oriental: it comes from Puerto de Piqueras through Barriomartín and continues towards Almarza. The two routes differ in their course and in the places with which they are connected.

Festivals and historical traces

At the beginning of August, festivities are held in Barriomartín in honour of the Virgen del Rosario. Saint Jerónimo’s feast day is celebrated on 30 September. The parish church of Barriomartín is dedicated to Saint Jerónimo. Over the course of the year, the celebration in honour of the Virgen del Rosario and Saint Jerónimo’s feast day take place on different dates.

The remains of the former El Vadillo livestock complex lie between Barriomartín and La Póveda, in the nearby area. The complex was used for housing and shearing livestock, as well as for other related activities. The Marquisate of Vadillo was established on the site of El Vadillo. A wall remains, which may be the remains of the former church. There are also memories of a chapel whose dedication has not been passed down. Alongside the festivities and the parish church, El Vadillo is one of the historical traces in and near Barriomartín.

The wider regional area around Barriomartín includes the Yacimiento Arqueológico de Numancia archaeological site, Cerro Castillo mountain and Canto Hincado mountain. The archaeological sites Renieblas IV, Renieblas I and Renieblas V are also located there, as are the Mirador de los Cuatro Vientos and Mirador de Romera viewpoints.
